Managed Wetlands Can Benefit Juvenile Chinook Salmon in a Tidal Marsh

چکیده

Abstract Loss of estuarine and coastal habitats worldwide has reduced nursery habitat function for diverse fishes, including juvenile Chinook salmon ( Oncorhynchus tshawytscha ). Underutilized off-channel such as flooded rice fields managed ponds present opportunities improving rearing conditions increasing diversity along migratory corridors. While experiments in have shown enhanced growth rates are less studied. To evaluate the potential these a habitat, (~ 2.8 g, 63 mm FL) were reared cages four contrasting locations within Suisun Marsh, large wetland San Francisco Estuary. The included natural tidal slough, leveed inlet outlet tidally muted pond established waterfowl hunting. Fish differed significantly among locations, with fastest occurring near pond. High zooplankton biomass at was best correlate growth. Water temperatures also cooler variable compared to sloughs, reducing thermal stress. stress low dissolved oxygen concentrations likely mediated by high favorable temperatures. Our findings suggest that Estuary elsewhere could be promote survival other native fishes.

Salt Marsh Tidal Channels

Salt marsh tidal channels are highly sinuous. For this project, field surveys and aerial photographs were used to characterize the planform of tidal channels at China Camp Marsh in the San Francisco Bay, California. To model the planform evolution, we assume that the topographic curvature of the channel centreline is a key element driving meander migration. Extraction of curvature data from a p...

Egg size and emergence timing affect morphology and behavior in juvenile Chinook Salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha

Variation in early life history traits often leads to differentially expressed morphological and behavioral phenotypes. We investigated whether variation in egg size and emergence timing influence subsequent morphology associated with migration timing in juvenile spring Chinook Salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha. Based on evidence for a positive relationship between growth rate and migration timi...

Costs of living for juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in an increasingly warming and invaded world

Rapid environmental change in freshwater ecosystems has created a need to understand the interactive effects of multiple stressors, with temperature and invasive predators identified as key threats to imperiled fish species. We tested the separate and interactive effects of water temperature and predation by non-native smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) on the lethal (mortality) and subleth...
